Gunpowder Green Tea
Gunpowder Green Tea (or “pearl tea”) is one of the oldest types of Loose Chinese Green Tea. This tea originates from the Zhejiang province in China. The production technique for this type of tea is one of the oldest one in China. This technique dates back to the Tang Dynasty (7th – 9th century AD). The four most important steps in the production technique for this tea include withering, steaming, rolling and drying tea leaves.
The most interesting step in the production of Gunpowder Green Tea is the rolling technique. The method involves rolling tea leaves in so-called “pearls”, hence its name that translates from Chinese as “pearl tea”. This method of rolling usually applies to dry green tea leaves. However, sometimes this technique is used for Loose Oolong Tea too.
You might wonder why this tea is called ‘gunpowder’ in English-speaking countries, although it translates as ‘pearl tea’ from Chinese. It is because its leaves are rolled in a shape that looks like gunpowder. What is more, its slightly greyish colour also creates this association.
